Valproate for agitation in critically ill patients: A retrospective study

Agitation occurs in up to 70% of critically ill patients and is a significant source of distress for patients, families, and providers. Sedatives are administered to >50% of intensive care unit (ICU) patients to alleviate agitation. Choice of sedative is complex and largely driven by patient context. No sedative has consistently been shown to be superior to the rest, and alternative agents are greatly needed.
